Renault confirms construction of Tangier
car plant
June 16, 2009

Rabat - The chief executive officer of Renault group, Carlos Ghosn, confirmed,
Monday in Rabat, the construction of the Tangier plant, whose first two models
are expected in early 2012.
Ghosn, who was received Monday by king Mohammed VI, underscored the strategic
nature of the Tangier project for the Renault-Nissan Alliance.
The Alliance and the Moroccan government had, in September 2007, signed a
memorandum of understanding and a general agreement late 2007 on the project.
The 600Mn-plant is expected to make 170,000 vehicles a year. It will be expanded
two years later to produce 400,000.
The project will create some 6,000 direct jobs and about 30,000 indirect ones.
It will produce Renault's low-cost Logan car, in addition to commercial vehicles
for Renault, Dacia and Nissan, 90% of which are destined for export.
Ghosn, who visited Sunday the site of the future plant and the Tangier-Med port,
announced that the construction works are due next September. He added that the
two brands of the group, Renault and Dacia, are leaders in the Moroccan market,
ranking 1st and 2nd respectively.
He said Renault seeks to reinforce its position in the historically strong
countries such as Morocco, Turkey and Romania.
